DAY 1: A very real enemy

02 Aug 2013 6 Comments

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
-John 10:10

I am not one to overemphasize the work of the devil. But even Jesus warned us that the devil only comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). He called the devil a murderer and the father of lies (John 8:44). In the Book of Revelation, John called him an old serpent who deceives the whole world (Rev. 12:9).

We have a very real enemy, and he first showed up in the Garden of Eden in the form of a serpent.

The good news is that you have the power to defeat him through Jesus Christ! Read the second half of John 10:10 again — “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” Jesus came so that we may have life . . . abundant life. No matter how the enemy is coming against you today, remember, that the snake is no match for Jesus.

In what ways have you seen the enemy attack your life and your family?

Heavenly Father,
Open my eyes to the attacks of the enemy in my life and in my family. Give me discernment and wisdom to see the snake for what he is. I know that my strength is found in You. Thank You for the abundant life You offer. Amen.

DAY 2: Just breathe …

And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
-John 20:22

The Bible often refers to Satan as a serpent or snake. But snakes differ in the way they hunt and destroy their prey. I believe the Lord showed me that the devil operates a lot like a python in the way he tries to infiltrate people’s lives. He slowly coils his way around us and we hardly notice — until suddenly we find we cannot breathe.

The python is after breath. Breath, air, and wind are symbols of the Holy Spirit in Scripture. Satan desires to squeeze the breath of the Holy Spirit and His anointing from our lives. That makes the enemy very dangerous because God’s Word tells us it’s not by might or by power, but by His Spirit (Zech. 4:6).

Be aware of the subtle attacks of the serpent. Are you losing your passion for the Lord, for the Word, for prayer, and for praise? Don’t brush it off as a spiritual slump. Understand this is the python attack of the enemy.

Take inventory of your spiritual walk. How often do you pray? How often do you read God’s Word? How is your personal worship?

Heavenly Father,
Fill me anew with Your Holy Spirit today. I pray for a renewed zeal and a fresh passion in my life to spend time in Your Word, in prayer, and in worship. More than anything, I want to inhale Your very breath! I want to breathe again! Amen.

DAY 3: Are you under attack?

04 Aug 2013 4 Comments

Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
-Matthew 26:41

When it comes to a spiritual attack, it is crucial to recognize the warning signs. Take a look at some of the ways you can detect the devil trying to slither his way into your life:

• You have a loss of spiritual desire.
• You experience physical fatigue.
• You are under “lack attack.”
• You have a weakening prayer life.
• You feel overwhelmed and hopeless.
• Old habits and lifestyle begin to resurface in your life.
• You pull away from godly relationships.

If you are experiencing any of these in your life, watch out!

Name one instance in your life recently where you know without a doubt that you were under spiritual attack. What made you vulnerable?

Heavenly Father,
Open my eyes to the hidden attacks of the enemy today. Help me to strengthen my walk of faith by inhaling the Word of God and exhaling with prayer. I make a new commitment today to spend time breathing You in. Amen.

DAY 4: Stand your ground!

Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
-Luke 10:19

If you are ready to take a stand against the enemy’s attack in your life, there are five “do nots” that you must remember.

1. Do not forget who made you. God created you to be weatherproof. The storm may bend you, but you won’t break. Through Him you will make it.
2. Do not forsake the time and place of prayer. Create a time and find a place to meet God regularly.
3. Do not forsake the place of power. The enemy will try to pull you away from church. Do not allow that to happen.
4. Do not forsake the power of partnership. Surround yourself with spiritual giants who have fought the good fight of faith and are still standing.
5. Do not disconnect from pastoral protection. God has given pastors the responsibility of feeding and protecting the flock.

If you don’t already have a place and regular time to meet God in prayer, set that time now. Make a commitment to faithful prayer for a month.

Heavenly Father,
I’m so grateful that I don’t have to meet the enemy alone. I know You are with me and that You have placed godly men and women around me for encouragement and strength. Thank You, Father, for equipping me for success. Amen.

DAY 5: Another dimension

06 Aug 2013 3 Comments

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
-Ephesians 6:12

Scripture teaches that there are spiritual battles taking place all around us because we live in two worlds at the same time. One is a physical world that we can see, smell, hear, touch, and taste. The other is a spiritual world. We cannot see it with the natural eye or experience it with the rest of our natural senses, but it is very real.

Atmosphere plays a big role in connecting these two worlds. The devil knows the power of atmosphere. You can grow bananas in Jamaica but not Alaska. Why? The difference is the atmosphere. Atmosphere creates a climate and climate creates a culture. If the enemy can get you in his culture — at a wild party, for example — he knows he can get you to sin.

The same is true for the Holy Spirit. The atmosphere of holiness, purity, praise, worship, prayer, love, and unity attract the Holy Spirit — just as an atmosphere of lust, drunkenness, anger, and hatred attracts demonic spirits.

You impact your spirit by the atmosphere you choose.

What kind of atmosphere does your life have? Are you attracting the Holy Spirit, or is the atmosphere just right for a demonic invasion?

Heavenly Father,
I want to create an atmosphere in my life where Your Spirit is welcome. Please fill my life with the Fruits of the Spirit so that I am a dwelling place for Your presence. Amen.

DAY 6: ABCs of demonic power

07 Aug 2013 3 Comments

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.
-1Timothy 4:1

In Matthew, the disciples asked Jesus why they were unable to cast the evil spirit out of a child. Jesus answered, “This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting” (Matt. 17:21). “This kind” would indicate that there are spirits with different ranks.

It is helpful to know a few of the general types of evil spirits mentioned in the Bible.

• Tormenting or vexing spirits are lower-ranking demons that come to oppose your mind and bring depression, fear, and excessive worry.
• Deceiving spirits pervert teachings, twist the Word of God, and lead people away from the faith in God 1 Tim. 4:1.
• Territorial spirits are higher-level principalities that try to control the culture of certain geographical areas.

As a born-again believer, you have been given authority over any demon that tries to torment your life. Your first response should be to take authority over it and rebuke it in the name of Jesus. Your second response should be to lift up praise to God because it will change the atmosphere and cause a shift in the spiritual realm. Put on worship music or verbally praise the Lord. Remember, atmosphere is everything!

Write out “praise phrases” that you can use to verbally praise the Lord and chase away the spirit of heaviness.

Heavenly Father,
Today, I just want to praise You. You are good and I know You are working all things together for my good. Thank You for loving me. Amen.
