The Wise Man And The Foolish Man

“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” Matthew 7:24-27

Moffett’s translation of this verse says, “Stupid builder!” It’s not wise to build your life on things that will not endure. There are people today that are building their houses on the sand. James 1:22 says, “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.” The Word of God is the foundation for our lives. It is what we build our marriages on. God’s Word tells us how to work and interact with the people in our lives. It instructs us on how to raise our children. The Bible teaches us how to handle success and how to deal with hard times. Our whole life should be built on its principles.

1 John 2:16-17 says, “For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” The world wants you to build your life on material things, pleasures, accomplishments, and appearances. Almost every ad you see on social media or TV is an attempt to entice you to want more of something. But none of those things will truly fulfill you because you were created for more.

If you insist on building your house where the world says to build it, God will not be in it. Jesus made a point to teach His disciples about foundations because He knew so many people were on unstable ground. If you have not been building your house, your family, or your marriage on the rock, it’s never too late. You can get off the sinking sand and get on the rock today. Decide today to rededicate your life, your relationships, and your dreams to God.
