Fasting. It changes things.

What if YOU could change God’s mind? If you’ve been fighting an uphill battle in your family, your finances, your career, even in your marriage—fasting can turn things around.

Don’t get me wrong, fasting won’t force God to do something He doesn’t will to do. But it opens up the door for Him to move in your life in miraculous ways. Fasting is a spiritual cleansing that gets out the garbage! We can become so under the influence of our environment that our sensitivity to God is weakened. When we fast and seek Him above our own physical needs, carnal obstacles begin to break down.

Galatians 5:19-21 lays out all the obstacles our flesh throws at us such as adultery, fornication, hatred, jealousy, selfish ambitions, drunkenness ... The message puts it into such relatable terms:

It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community.

Doesn’t that sound like an episode of almost any TV show you turn on today? It may sound like your co-worker’s weekend. Or it may hit closer to home. BUT BREAKTHROUGH IS COMING!

When we stop pursuing our way and our wants and humble ourselves in fasting and prayer to diligently seek God, things change! Where it felt like judgment was on your house, restoration can come! In 1 Kings 21:25, Ahab had “sold himself to do wickedness,” but because he humbled himself in fasting God did not bring judgment in his days.

In Joel 2:12, God calls His people to repentance saying to them, “Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning” (NKJV). And instead of destruction and devour Joel says in verse 14, “Who knows if He will turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind Him.”

When you humble yourself in fasting before God, He can turn situations around! He can cleanse you of the sin that entangles you and rid your life of the garbage hindering you from seeing His way and hearing His voice. He can bring the answers you’ve been waiting for and replace judgment with blessing!

Fasting isn’t about making demands and getting what you want. It’s about getting to a place where you’re ready for what God wants!
