Many times we think it’s our gifts and talents that qualify us. But have you ever thought about having the “right spirit” may qualify you? This is really how God looks upon you. David writes in Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in me.” The right spirit is what God uses to qualify us, as long as it is a humble spirit, and a loving spirit; a spirit God can use.
What is a humble spirit? The Bible says that God gives grace to the humble, access to the humble, but He keeps the proud at arms length. Moses was a humble man, …”more than any other man on earth.” (Num. 12:3). God does not reveal his secrets to just anyone. If He did, each person would use his or her own interpretation to explain what God means. Moses, on the other hand, had none of the ego the others had, so God was able to reveal much to him. Moses’ humility gave him more trust in the eyes of God.
A humble spirit is missing in many Christian lives, because we look out for ourselves first. We need to get back to a place of servitude. A place where we can put our own self-interest aside and put other people’s needs above our own. It’s not your gifts and talents that make or break you—it’s your spirit … your character … your heart. Can God trust your spirit? What are you transferring to others? Is it unforgiveness, anger, and resentment; or is it grace, hope, and joy? Which type of influence do you want to be? Which type of influencer do you think God cam trust with His message?
As we read the Bible it will enter our hearts, and we need to humble ourselves when this happens. We must be humble as to what it has to say to us. Proverbs 20:27 declares that, “The spirit of man is a candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the body.” The Spirit of God must lead us. Humility shows that we are not totally self-dependent.
Think about this: When God does something miraculous for you, when He blesses you immensely, can you stay humble enough to be used in an extraordinary way? Can you keep giving God the glory or will you take the credit? Humility attracts the favor of God, and He will do more great things in our lives when we remain humble.
We seem to disqualify ourselves because we think what we do is through our own self-effort. This is why prayer is needed, and such an important part of our lives. Prayer simply acknowledges the fact that “I need God.” So don’t be self-reliant. Don’t lose your humility; don’t lose your dependence on God. The more He prospers you, the more dependent on Him you should become. Stay low; stay humble, and He’ll use you for his purpose and his plan.
