I Serve a Happy God

God spoke further to Moses and said to him, “I am the Lord; and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name, Lord, I did not make Myself known to them.

—Exodus 6:2-3

Abraham, Isaac and Jacob knew God. They knew Him as God almighty. But there was still something about Him they didn’t know. They didn’t know Him as LORD—the present God. In other words, they knew Him as the God they perceived Him to be. And the way that they saw Him, that is the God He became to them. But there is so much more of God that He wants to show us, that He sent Jesus so that we could know Him as Lord.

We can only reflect of God what we see of God. If you see God as mean, angry, or out to get you and mad at you, then that’s the kind of God you’re going to reflect to others. AND that perspective is going to affect the relationship you have with God.

So many people have only seen a certain kind of God in their mind, and that’s who they think God is. But God wants you to see Him as Lord. He wants you to see Him as Jesus, who is God in the flesh. The Bible teaches us that Jesus came to show us what God looks like: He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation” (Colossians 1:15).

People go to church and expect to find a tired, sad, boring congregation. They expect to hear the sky is falling; the world is ending and if you aren’t ready, then you’re no good. But that is not the God of the Bible. That is not His message. He said, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly (John 10:10).” In another version it says “live life to its fullest”, and yet another interpretation says “life in its fullest measure.”

When the world peers into the lives of Christians, when they enter the doors of our churches, they should see happy people. Not fake people pretending everything is perfect in their life—of course we all have sorrow—but we know our source of joy is not in our circumstances, it’s in Jesus, and Jesus is the center of our life. YES! We’re going through some challenges just like anyone else, but no man can take our joy. No circumstance can take YOUR joy.

If that’s not the life you live, then you need to get back to a Jesus-centered life. Our joy should not be in materialism. Our joy should not be in how much money we have. Our joy should not be in anything this world has to offer. Our joy comes from Jesus, and our hope in Him:

Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.

—John 14:1-4

Our God is a joyful God. He is a happy God, and a musical God. He said praise me in the dance. He said praise me with the loud cymbals. He’s not sitting up there during praise and worship with His fingers in His ears, saying I wish they’d turn down the volume. God says, I like rejoicing, I like a party, and I like celebration!

As a matter of fact, the Bible says, “enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts praise” (Psalm 100:4). You’re not getting in His presence without praise.

We cannot deny we have challenges, or deny when our heart is heavy. But we must not dwell in our sorrow. The joy of the Lord is your strength! You can take it, and you can make it, because He is with you!

Take a minute and create an atmosphere that invites God … and smile, because He’s a happy God!
