Star Wars: The Force Awakens recently blew the doors off the box office with record earnings of $249 million dollars opening weekend. Known for epic battle scenes of good versus evil, right versus wrong and light versus darkness, it has packed theaters for decades.
No matter how knowledgeable you may be on the series, the bad guy is easily pinpointed. With his outfit, his voice and his demeanor, he basically screams, “Hey! Over here! I am the villain!”
Our real life enemy is not so easily distinguishable. His destructive plan for your life doesn’t come in a box clearly marked TNT, nor will he parade around dressed in black with obvious respiratory issues.
On the contrary, he masks himself as an appealing angel of light, and fights with subtle mistruths, discouragements and defeats. He is strategic, strong and sinister. If you don’t know much about him, you probably wouldn’t even realize he is at work. But he certainly is.
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12 ESV).
Lucky for us, he is also DEFEATED!
What comfort there is in knowing the resolve before entering the conflict. As you go about your week, be intentional about clothing yourself in the armor Jesus has provided. Pull tight that belt of integrity. Shoulders back in your breastplate of purity. Double knot your boots of peace. Hold fast to that shield of certainty. Strap tight your helmet of sanity and sharpen up with His word.
You were never created to be a paying spectator in someone else’s battle. So suit up, there is a war to win.
Oh, and let His force be with you.
