The Power of Personal Prophecy

This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare (1 Tim. 1:18).

Whether you realize it or not, there is a prophetic word over your life.

Prophetic words may come through a sermon a preacher’s preaching. They may come through someone who is a spiritual authority in your life—perhaps a parent or a pastor. Or they may come through God’s written Word.

Prophecy is a word from God about your future or your family’s future. God tells us prophecy is also a weapon we use to wage war against the enemy.

God charged Timothy to wage the good war using the prophecies over his life. We must do the same thing. Victory results when we use the prophetic words spoken over our lives and our family’s lives as weapons to wage spiritual warfare.

There are some spiritual blessings we receive just because of our identity as a child of God. In the natural, if our father or grandfather dies, we receive an inheritance just because of who we are. Jesus spoke of this in a spiritual sense in Mark chapter 10, when He said, “whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” We receive forgiveness, grace, and eternal life just because we are God’s child.

But in Matthew 11:12, Jesus says there are other blessings we must fight for: “…the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.”

We fight for the fullness of God’s blessing for ourselves and our families by engaging the prophetic word in our spiritual battles.

You may wonder whether there’s any prophecy over your life. The answer is, yes! For example, if you have a family, there’s a prophecy for you: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Josh. 24:15). All your family, all your children, and all your grandchildren have this prophecy over them.

God says it’s not enough to leave that prophecy hanging dormant. On the contrary, when the enemy attacks our families, we take that prophecy and go to war with it.

How do you go to war with a prophecy? Decree the prophecy. Say it out loud. Pray it. Speak what has been spoken over you and God will join the fight with you. When the enemy dares to mess with your family, declare Joshua 24:15. When he tries to attack your finances, declare Psalm 37:25, “I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread.”

What word of prophecy applies to your situation? Find it and declare it.

We urgently need to embrace the prophetic word in our lives! We need weapons to wage the war against the enemy. As we speak the prophetic, our thoughts change, our actions change, and we become strong in the battle.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).

When we think the prophetic, and we speak the prophetic, we win the battle.

I read recently that when we habitually think wrong thoughts, each thought is a brick that gives the devil an opportunity to build a stronghold in our lives. With bricks of fear, bricks of hopelessness, and bricks of disobedience, we give Satan authority in certain areas of our lives.

Thank God, we can break down strongholds! Brick by brick, we can throw them down. The prophecy over you is not guilt, condemnation, and defeat. The prophecy over you is freedom, breakthrough, and deliverance.

You may be just one proclamation away from victory!

Grab hold of the prophecies of God’s Word over your life and begin to proclaim them against the enemy. Go to war with the prophecies you’ve been given. When you do, the power of God will break loose in your life!
