Update on Baby Elijah

Many of you will remember baby Elijah. For those of you who haven’t heard about him, he has quite a story.

In the early morning of June 1, 2014, a worker heard what he thought was the weak cry of a baby goat outside the Love A Child Orphanage in Haiti. When the worker investigated, he found an abandoned baby boy hidden among the thistle bushes. The baby was covered with sores and extremely dehydrated. Although he looked like a newborn, doctors determined that he was probably more than two months old. After a stay at the hospital and the completion of legal requirements, he was brought home to the orphanage and put under the care of our partner missionaries. He was named Elijah.

Since then, Elijah has been through many difficulties. He has battled through blood transfusions and surgery. He suffered with meningitis, which is an infection of the membranes that line the brain and spinal cord. It is very painful and often leads to death. He developed hydrocephalus, a condition in which fluid accumulates in the brain, which required a shunt in his head. There were many times when it looked like he might not survive.

In the face of all of this, thousands of people around the world prayed for Elijah’s recovery and his health. God answers prayer! Elijah not only survived, but has improved dramatically. He continues to gain weight and now responds to voices and movement. God has brought Elijah a long way but he still has a long road ahead of him. James 5:16 says that the earnest prayer of a righteous man has great power and wonderful results. Please continue to pray earnestly that God will continue to work miracles for baby Elijah.
