Impossible situations and impossible dreams are awesome because they trigger the supernatural, miraculous power of God. If you’re facing something impossible, don’t despair – God specializes in doing the impossible. But the impossible doesn’t just happen. To see the impossible, we need to seek God through fasting.
Matthew chapter 17 tells the story of a father who had a demon-possessed son. For years he watched helplessly as his son had convulsions, threw himself into the fire or threw himself into water. A suicidal spirit tormented him constantly.
The father exhausted every possibility to cure the boy, even taking him to the disciples, but nothing changed. The father’s situation seemed impossible. Then he heard that Jesus was near! When the boy was brought to Jesus, He rebuked the devil and it left the boy. What made the difference? Why could Jesus cast out the evil spirit when the disciples could not? Jesus had already given the disciples authority to cast out evil spirits and heal every disease. Why couldn’t the disciples cast out the demon and heal the boy?
The disciples asked the same question, and Jesus’ answer is in Matthew 17:20-21 (NKJV): “So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
Jesus told them they needed faith, but faith wasn’t all they needed. They also needed to pray and fast. You see, before this incident Jesus had spent 40 days and 40 nights in the wilderness, fasting and praying. The Son of God fasted because He knew that there were supernatural things that could only be released through fasting. For Jesus, casting out that demon wasn’t impossible because He had spent time fasting and praying. He was ready to see the impossible.
Would you like to see the impossible become reality? Do you desperately need resolution to an impossible situation? Follow the example of Jesus. Pray and have faith, but don’t stop there. Take the next step and make the powerful decision to access the supernatural through fasting.
