Because He Lives

And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. Then all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground (Nehemiah 8:6 NKJV).

A young man joined our team at Free Chapel some time ago. He had just finished chemotherapy and radiation treatments and was in remission from cancer. He said that as he prayed right before his first treatment, still questioning “Why?” and desperate for God to heal him, the Lord brought the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to mind and this particular verse:

“… and they saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power; the hair of their head was not singed nor were their garments affected, and the smell of fire was not on them” (Daniel 3:27 NKJV).

Even though this was a story he had heard in Sunday school his entire life, never before did those Words have such meaning. He said he felt the Holy Spirit say, “You will go through the fire, but come out unharmed—without even the stench of smoke.” And what do you think he answered? Nine years and five children later, he is still saying, “Amen, Amen!”

We serve a living, breathing Savior. It is because He is alive that we too can have life and life more abundant! He is not a distant deity, rather a Redeemer who will walk by your side through the fire.
