Fasting Special

January 06, 2017

Maybe you are on the fence with whether or not to fast. Maybe fasting is something foreign to you, and maybe even a little unnerving. Try it! Fasting is nothing more than abstaining from food to draw closer to God. It is not a diet, though getting healthy is a side effect. It is submitting our mind, body and spirit to an almighty God . . . A God who holds the universe in the palm of His hand, yet has a deep desire to draw close to each of us personally.

Connection Point

“Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.”

Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love”  (Joel 2: 12-13 ESV).

Connection Questions

  1. Why fast?
  2. What increases as we fast?
  3. What does it mean to fast?
  4. What is God’s deep desire?
  5. What does it mean to do a “Daniel’s Fast”?
  6. What are you praying for this year? Write them down!

Crazy things happen when people get spiritually hungry. When people get hungrier for God than they are for food surgeons go in to operate on malignant tumors, only to find nothing there; babies with heart conditions are given clean bills of health; barren women find themselves expecting; jobless fathers stumble into financial breakthrough.

Fasting draws us closer to God. Our love and devotion to God increases as we fast and we are able to draw closer to Him. Fasting is abstaining from food to draw closer to God. It is submitting our mind, body and spirit to an almighty God. God's deep desire is to draw close to each of us personally. The Daniel Fast involves a spiritual commitment to God. “Daniel proposed in his heart that he would not defile himself” (Daniel 1:8). Faith is foundational to the Daniel Fast. Daniel was making a statement of faith when he asked for only vegetables to eat and water to drink. Here is what I am praying for this year and I need your prayers too. 1. healing for my elder son Ranjith who is suffering from Fissure and Fistula. 2. Safe delivery for my daughter-in-law Filie who is expecting her baby by Feb 20th or earlier. Healthy baby and God's grace. 3. For Joshua my 5 and a half year old grandson who has developmental delays and behavioural and understanding issues. For all my grandchildren Tarun 10 years old ,Tanay 4 yr old, Tasha 1yr and 10 months old, Joshua 5 and half yr old...to grow up in the knowledge of the Lord as His children and for their health. For Sujith my younger son and his wife Filie to be guided in parenthood and their good health. For Preethy my elder daughter-in-law's health and guidance. For my brother Thomas's salvation to know our Lord as his personal Saviour and for reunion with his daughter Juhi if it is God's will.
