Steps to a Double Portion

There’s an opportunity for a great anointing in your life. Are you willing to go after it?

Elijah put his cloak on Elisha. It was symbolic of Elijah passing on his anointing to the next generation. But when you read this story closely, you’ll see that Elisha wasn’t satisfied with what Elijah had. HE WANTED MORE.

As Christians we can become complacent and satisfied knowing that we’re going to heaven. But God wants us to live an abundant life here and now! If you are willing to go after God, there is a greater anointing! Just like Elisha went after Elijah and boldly asked for a double portion, if you’re willing to put your own plans aside and seek out what God has for you . . . there is more!

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7).

If you truly want a double portion from the Lord, there are three stages you will go through, much like the three places Elisha followed Elijah through on his journey to a double portion.

First, you must be willing to let go of the old. You have to go through a place of separation. You cannot move forward and stay still at the same time. If you want to move into the greater things God has for you, you must be willing to separate yourself from things that could be holding you back. Romans 12:9 says to “Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.”

Next, you have to through a place of transformation. God can only work with the things you’re wiling to give Him. If you spend too much time trying to hide the things your ashamed of or deny your shortcomings, you’ll miss your opportunity to be transformed and move on from who you used to be into whom God created you to be. You must do more than go to church Sunday after Sunday. You must have true encounter with God and be transformed by the Holy Spirit.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).

Finally, you must get to a place of occupation—that place where you know how to occupy and walk in the position and place God has called you to.  It’s one thing to experience a blessing. It’s one thing to experience a breakthrough or victory. But it’s something else to walk in the favor of God all the time, to live in His blessing and victory! God told Joshua, “I will give you every place where you set your foot” (Joshua 1:3).

It doesn’t necessarily come easy. It’s not going to come without some fight and effort from your side. But if you are willing, like Elisha was, to chase after a double portion, the opportunity is there. God’s already blessed you. His cloak is on you. Go after Him with all your heart and see what’s in store!
