When to Fast

Daily Devotions, Fasting18 Comments

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.John 16:13

It’s easy to recognize physical hunger, but what about spiritual hunger? Aside from the corporate fast we are doing right now, how do you know when to fast? There are times when you should fast on your own and you need to know how to recognize those times.

Mammoth Tasks Have you ever been faced with something that you knew was impossible to accomplish on your own? God gave Nehemiah a burden for the city of his people. When he received word about the condition of Jerusalem he said, “So it was, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven” (Nehemiah 1:4). Nehemiah knew he had to do something.

Against amazing odds, Nehemiah got the job done! God empowered and equipped Nehemiah to rebuild the city in a ridiculously short period of time. You may not be rebuilding city walls, but God has put a dream in your heart. Fast and pray for His means and direction to accomplish it.

Physical Danger or Under Attack Queen Esther and all the Jews were under threat of extermination at the hand of Haman. She called a 3-day fast for the Jews. What the Enemy intended for evil, God turned around for good because she humbled herself, fasted and prayed, and sought His face!

Are you facing something that will put you in physical danger? Are you facing surgery, a dangerous journey of some sort? Do you or someone you love serve in the military? You can fast and pray for the protection?

Appalled Sometimes we are so overwhelmed by a sin in our nation, that it drives us to our knees and causes us to fast. The fact that we live in a society where human trafficking—specifically the sale of little children in the sex-trade—could become the second highest crime in the nation is utterly appalling. The only thing more appalling is how long this nation has said that our children are disposable, beginning in the womb.

Demonic Oppression Jesus said there are times when nothing but fasting and prayer will drive out the source of demonic oppression in someone’s life (Mark 9:29). Demons are real. Jesus began His earthly ministry with a grueling 40-day fast and gave His followers authority over the power of the Enemy.

The Holy Spirit’s Prompting The Holy Spirit knows when you need to fast. He led Jesus on His first fast in the wilderness. The Holy Spirit knows when you are losing the edge in your life. Jesus said of the Holy Spirit, “…when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth. (John 16:13). The more you choose to make fasting and prayer part of your life, the more sensitive you become to the Spirit of God.

Thank you Pastor Franklin for this word today. Especially reminding me of the difference between demomic oppression and demonic posession. There is a difference isn’t there? I think I have seen the demonic oppression in myself and others. I praise the Lord for the deliverance this fast will bring in both myself and my family memebers. In Jesus’ Mighty name, AMEN!!!

Pastor, today’s devotion has helped me to recognize those times when prayer and fasting is the only option. I can identify well with two of them: Mammoth Task (at my job) and the demonic oppression (my daughter’s sickness which does not make any sense to the medical specialists). Matthew 17:21 “But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting”.

Please pray with me and for my family that we shall overcome and that Christ is glorified in whatever way our prayers shall be answered. Thank you.

      Good day Laura,

My son has also experienced demonic oppression/possession . It has been the most difficult thing to go through as a believer as he was a model son that served actively in church since 17 ( he is 23 now) We fasted, prayed, took him for deliverance on countless occasions and nothing seems to help. When we went the medical route and started with medication all hell broke loose. After an intense battle for his life we decided to stop with the medication and things went on for about four more months after that.
We confessed the word daily that” me and my household WILL be saved “and we stood on every other promise of God . My husband would often interject our comments be saying we must speak the word in every situation, trust the word, and speak to my son as he IS healed. We would give correction for the wrong but treat him like there inothing wrong with him. We often drew his attention back to the word to find answers in overcoming his battle even when he was about to manifesting . Fasting and praying gave us the courage to face this battle head on. God have come to touch him a month ago and we see to restoration every day. Everday there is still attacks on his mind but we remain thankful that full restoration is here. I am fasting to thank The Lord for what he has done thus far and are still going to do.
May God strengthen you during this fast and your daughter WILL testify about the goodness of God!

I have been struggling with this fast. I don’t know if the timing is not right or that God is about to do a miraculous thing in my life and the enemy knows it. I start the day off right But during the course of the day, I eat the wrong thing or I don’t drink enough water or whatever. I’m not giving up. I will continue to purpose in my heart what I should do and do it! Pray that I stay faithful.

You can do it Veronica. It is the right time and the enemy knows it. Keep striving and reading these devotionals. We are praying with you.

    2. Sandra

Dear Veronica, please don’t give up, hold on. I’ll be praying. Remember, we are fasting for complete victory. The victory is ours, we just need to continue marching. What helps me is to listen to podcasts from a good preacher like Pastor Franklin, also, listening to christian music, reading christian books and most importantly spending time in God’s Word. Praying His Word helps me tremendously. You will see breakthrough.

Thanks Pastor Franklin for your daily devotions! I am learning so much through your guidance. I never thought about the fact of knowing “When to Fast.” I have read the scriptures you mentioned before, but I never meditated on them to the point of thinking when I am faced with an opposition where I don’t know what to do, that I should FAST.

This fast is truly a revelation experience for me. I am committed to making fasting a part of my life continusously. GOD BLESS ALL WHO ARE ON THIS FAST–Together we are gaining insight on how we should operate in God’s Kingdom!

I have to remind myself today that this isn’t about “the fast.” It’s about touching and hearing the heart of God.

    Be still.
    Be strong.

Pastor Franklin, I just want to thank you for just having great vision. It has really helped me to see fasting in a different light and also helping me to draw closer to God. I started the fast on the first day and i am continuing to the end, because right now I am dealing some stuff that I cant accomplish on my own and is only with Gods help and fasting I can. so please pray for me to have the strength to continue. any may God continue to bless you and your ministry.

  9. Denise

Just want to encourage you all to stay the course on this fast! I see the comments getting lower and lower by the day and I just hope that means that people are spending more of their time in the presence of God! I know my struggle comes when I become more concerned with the logistics of the fast that remembering what the fast is truly about. We’re halfway through, saints! Don’t give up!

  10. Christine

The rewards that come due to prayer and fasting are very immeasurable, that it is worth taking your time to do this. The blessings that are released by God are the best that you will ever get. And they all come with no strings attached, free of charge. The were already paid for at Calvary. They will be so many that you will never finish enjoying them in this life. out God is an awesome God. Give Him all the Glory every day of your life. Be blessed my fellow Fasters.

I thank God for this fast. My desire is to please The Lord. My meditation scripture as been Psalm 51:10. When I’m attacked in wanting to gossip, judge others, or that self righteous spirit tries to take control of my spirit I say this scripture. “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me. Amp. version. I felt the sensitivity of The Holy Spirit today. Instead of getting down on my knees and praying I allowed self to take over the situation. I failed because I didn’t take heed of The Holy Spirit. Please pray for me as I continue the fast and give, but to PRAY more.

  12. Sandra

Thank you Pastor Franklin for encouraging us daily through this time of fasting and prayer. It is awesome to see my brothers and sisters in Christ just wanting to be closer to God. I joined the fast guided by the Holy Spirit after watching your broadcast, ‘Follow the Star’ on TBN; then I received more confirmation in your broadcast , ‘Fasting for complete victory’. I’m standing on God’s promise, ‘if you seek Me with all your heart, you will find Me’ Jer. 29:13.
God bless you, your family and your ministry.
To God be the glory now and forever!!!
